> Commentary: Gathering the assembly to explain it: first, gathering the assembly; later, distinguishing it for them. This is gathering the assembly. Although the eight classes of beings were listed before, some had come and some had not; now, due to the buddha emitting radiance and summoning them with mighty power, they were first able to assemble together. Question: In other sūtras, when radiance is emitted, the assembly gathers upon seeing it. Why did this assembly not come when illuminated by the light? Answer: Maturation has earlier and later stages. Although illuminated by the radiance, at first they were not yet able to come; only when the buddha added further power were they finally able to arrive. Or else, the buddha's mighty power was itself the summons by radiance.
