> Commentary: The power of good friends: the text is divided into four: first, being able to draw near; second, requesting the supreme Dharma; third, their hearing and contemplating; fourth, properly explaining it. This is the first. Here, the characteristics of a good friend, the activities of a good friend, and drawing near to a good friend should be explained. The first two are extensively analyzed in the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle forty-four. As for drawing near to a good friend, that text says: 'Through four characteristics one completely draws near to a good friend: 1. toward the good friend, whether sick or not sick, serving and attending at all times, constantly giving rise to affectionate respect and pure faith; 2. toward the good friend, inquiring respectfully at appropriate times, bowing, welcoming, joining palms, diligently cultivating harmonious and respectful actions as an offering; 3. toward the good friend, offering according to the Dharma robes, food and drink, bedding, and medicine for illness, and daily necessities at appropriate times; 4. toward the good friend, when properly relying on them, whether agreeing or disagreeing regarding the true meaning of the Dharma, following their sovereignty without being shaken, genuinely expressing a mind of reverence, visiting at appropriate times, respectfully serving, questioning, and receiving teachings.'"
