> Commentary: The following is an explanation. First, it explains the maturation fruit as a receptacle; second, from 'relying on this body' onward, it explains the causal condition, namely the sovereign fruit (adhipatiphala); third, from 'the mind of the non-retrogressing ground' onward, it clarifies the fruit of human effort (puruṣakāraphala); fourth, from 'Good son, this dharma body' onward, it clarifies the fruit of separation from bonds (visamyogaphala). As for the sphere of objects, it encompasses all these dharmas. The ten distinct fruits are the distinctions among these five fruits. This, then, is the first.
>
> 'One who understands this meaning' is, to begin with, an overarching exhortation to faith. 'This body is the Great Vehicle': because it serves as the sovereign power through which the fruit of the Great Vehicle is attained, it is called the Great Vehicle. 'Is the nature of the Tathāgata': through the various roots of goodness cultivated relying on this body, which gradually increase and grow, it becomes the nature of the Tathāgata. Moreover, the untranspired untainted seeds and the substance of tathatā constitute the nature of the Tathāgata; both phenomenal nature and ontological nature are called the Buddha-nature. 'Is the tathāgatagarbha': this is the consciousness of the maturation fruit. The Laṅkāvatārasūtra states: 'The ālaya-consciousness is called the empty tathāgatagarbha; because it is fully endowed with the perfuming of untainted dharmas, it is called the non-empty tathāgatagarbha. Because the tainted eighth \[consciousness\] is deceptive, it is called empty. The substance of the various untainted seeds within the consciousness is called the non-empty tathāgatagarbha, because it is free from deception.' To say 'fully endowed' means it is fully endowed with both tainted and untainted seeds.
