> "The Chapter on the Great Yakṣa General Saṃjñeya" is differentiated into three sections. Regarding the purpose of its arrival: among the five chapters that benefit merit and wisdom, the preceding \[chapters\] benefited the four unhindered eloquence\[s\] as well as clothing, food, and drink, whereas this one now benefits their wisdom. Due to the power of wisdom, one can preach the Dharma correctly and receive and use clothing and food. If one lacked wisdom, one might fearfully preach the Dharma erroneously and become defiled and attached to clothing and food. To be free from this fault, it bestows wisdom upon them, and thus this chapter arises. Alternatively explained: previously, Sarasvatī's bestowing eloquence was wisdom itself, while the heavenly goddess and the Earth Goddess's bestowing clothing and food was merit. Now, in order to benefit both doubly, this chapter arises. This spirit may be a bodhisattva of the third ground, because he has attained the light of wisdom, for the radiant wisdom of the light of wisdom is all-pervading in its named significance; or he may be of the fifth ground, because he thoroughly comprehends the real and the conventional; or he may be of the tenth ground, because he is able to penetrate realms of knowledge that are difficult to conceive. The twenty-first fascicle of the Mahāsaṃnipātasūtra explains that this great being made a vow in the past before buddhas such as Śikhin to become a spirit; he is the Great General Saṃjñeya of the older sūtra translations.
