- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [6.135](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1788.6.135)

> Second, explaining the name: this explains only the general name, not the specific names \[of each link\]. Although there are many explanations in the \*Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra\* and the \*Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā\*, we now rely on the \*Yogācārabhūmi\* to give four brief explanations. The first says: bound by defilements, they arise repeatedly among the various destinies; hence it is called "dependent origination" (\*pratītyasamutpāda\*). This is explained based on the words "dependent" (\*pratītya\*) and "origination" (\*samutpāda\*). The second says: depending on multiple conditions, having quickly perished, they arise in continuous concord; hence it is called dependent origination. This is explained based on the meaning of momentary arising and ceasing. It excludes the unconditioned nature held by the Mahāsāṃghika and others, and also excludes the single-period four characteristics held by the Sammatīya. The third says: multiple conditions, though past, are not abandoned, and by relying on their own stream of continuity they are able to arise; hence it is called dependent origination. As it is said, "because this exists, that exists; because this arises, that arises." It is not of other meanings, as explained before. The fourth says: having realized conditionality in past times, they arise in equal continuity; hence it is called dependent origination. As the World-Honoured One said: "Having realized \[it\], I equally raise and proclaim it." Based on this name it has been transmitted in turn; hence it is called dependent origination.
