> "Chapter on the Protection and Upholding by Devas and Yakṣas": distinguished through three sections. Regarding the purpose of its occurrence: there are five parts to the circulation of practice and study, and this is the fourth, directly clarifying upholding and studying. Furthermore, there are two aspects: first, citing the past; second, exhorting the present. Citing the past has two parts: first, citing others' upholding in the past; next, citing one's own upholding in the past. This chapter exhorts the present assembly to uphold \[the sūtra\]. Furthermore, it elaborates and fulfills the practice of circulating \[the sūtra\] by those able to uphold the sūtra and the eight classes of beings mentioned in the previous "Chapter on Protecting the Country"; hence this chapter arises.
