> The assertions of the tīrthikas do not go beyond the two views of annihilation and permanence. What is termed "when grasped realms perish, the stream of consciousness also perishes" is their conceptualization of annihilation. "Grasped realms" refers to the sense objects grasped by the mind and consciousness. When the inner teaching speaks of the stream perishing, it merely refers to the perishing of its marks, whereas its nature has never perished. The tīrthikas claim it perishes in terms of annihilation—how could they understand that the nature of the streaming consciousness arises from the beginningless storehouse consciousness! They also say that the cause of the stream's arising is not generated from the coming together of the four conditions of eye, consciousness, form, and light, but believe there is another distinct cause. As for these other causes: "the Pradhāna" is the primary nature, the divine lord who generates the Brahmā heaven. "The Puruṣa" is also called the Great Man, one of the sixteen views of self, another name for the spiritual self (ātman). "Īśvara" refers to Maheśvara. And conceptualizing seasons and times, subtle atoms, and so forth as producers—all the causes of arising conceptualized by the tīrthikas are of this kind.
