> Above, the Bodhisattva was encouraged to cultivate pratyātmāryajñāna; since wisdom has differences of great and small, the characteristics realized by śrāvakas are set forth, having two differences: 'the distinctive characteristics of attaining pratyātmāryajñāna' is the principle realized; 'the characteristics of grasping at the svabhāva of imagined natures' is giving rise to views through attachment to teaching. Although both are śrāvakas, their attainment and loss are forever different. Impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self are the contemplation of analytical emptiness cultivated by śrāvakas. 'Realms' are the realms that are emptied. 'The truth of reality' is the true principle. 'Detachment from desire, tranquility and extinction' means leaving the desire and love of the three realms and entering nirvāṇa without remainder. 'Quieting' the svalakṣaṇa, sāmānyalakṣaṇa, and self-and-common marks of the five skandhas, eighteen dhātus, and twelve āyatanas refers to the general and particular characteristics. 'Knowing as it truly is the non-destruction of external characteristics' means that because the śrāvaka cannot truly know that the characteristics of saṃsāra are identical to the characteristics of nirvāṇa, they regard them as external; because they must attain tranquility and extinction before their minds cease, once their minds are tranquil and ceased, they attain dhyāna-meditation down to liberation in correct absorption. As for 'not being free from vāsanās' and so forth: among the afflictions overcome, there are primary ones and habitual tendencies; they are only able to sever the primary ones, escaping the birth and death of fragmented lifespans, but cannot sever the habitual tendencies, still undergoing the birth and death of transformation. 'Fragmented lifespans' refers to the bodily, piecemeal birth and death within the three realms. 'Transformation' refers to the birth and death in the land of expedient means where causes shift and fruits alter. Calling it 'inconceivable' means that this birth and death of transformation cannot be conceived by ordinary people. 'Dwelling in bliss' means that the śrāvaka delights in dwelling in the nirvāṇa of true emptiness.
