> "Icchantika" is Sanskrit, translated here as "lacking in faith," and also called "extremely evil." "Not an icchantika" means not definitively extremely evil; if one were definitively extremely evil, there would never be a time when one transforms evil into good and attains liberation. However, although the active manifestations of an icchantika are evil, their nature does not sever goodness; if they can illumine their nature, they too can attain Buddhahood. Therefore, he further announced, "There are two kinds of icchantikas." Those who abandon all roots of goodness are truly extremely evil persons. Those who make vows for sentient beings from beginninglessness are the bodhisattva-icchantikas. The phrase "What is meant by abandoning all," and so forth, questions and explains the meaning of "extremely evil." Slandering the Bodhisattva Treasury and speaking evil words slanders both the persons and the Dharma; how could they be willing to accord with the dharmas of liberation in the sūtras and vinaya and enter nirvāṇa? The so-called icchantikas are those who have severed all cultivated goodness.
