> Since, in seeking the characteristic of arising through the expedient means of gradual and continuous arising, it is unfindable, it is said 'it is not so'; it is merely falsely called arising. Regarding "due to the causal condition, the perceptual condition, etc.," this refers to the four conditions (pratyaya). The mind conditioning objective dust is called 'grasping condition,' also named 'causal condition' (hetupratyaya); mental factors arising in succession is called 'immediate condition' (samanantarapratyaya); when dharmas arise, appearing in accordance with mind without producing obstruction, it is called 'predominant condition' (adhipatipratyaya); the mind relying on conditions to arise, as mental consciousness produces visual consciousness, is called 'object condition' (ālambanapratyaya). The word 'and so on' includes the object condition. Regarding 'arising and what is produced,' it means that false imagination arises from these four conditions, and seeking among them it is also unfindable, hence it says 'gradual arising does not arise.' Because these four conditions are also false constructions, neither gradual nor instantaneous \[arising\] arises; they are merely experienced as the appearance of one's own mind. Furthermore, when investigating the svalakṣaṇa and sāmānyalakṣaṇa of external entities, they also lack intrinsic nature. Except for foolish people who generate false imagination on their own, \[there is no arising\]; therefore the admonition states, 'one should abandon views of gradual or simultaneous \[arising\].'
