> Mahāmati again addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! Is speech itself the ultimate truth? Or is what is expressed the ultimate truth?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Neither speech is the ultimate truth, nor is what is expressed the ultimate truth. Why is this? Because the ultimate truth is the joy of the noble ones; what speech enters into is the ultimate truth, but speech itself is not the ultimate truth. The ultimate truth is attained through the noble ones' own self-realisation of noble wisdom (pratyātmāryajñāna); it is not a realm realised by speech or discrimination. Therefore speech and discrimination do not reveal the ultimate truth. Speech arises from the revolving causes and conditions of arising, ceasing, and agitation; if it arises from revolving causes and conditions, it does not reveal the ultimate truth. Mahāmati! Because the marks of self and other are devoid of inherent nature, the marks of speech do not reveal the ultimate truth. Furthermore, Mahāmati! In accordance with entering cittadṛśyamātra, the external natures of manifold marks are non-nature. Discriminatory speech does not reveal the ultimate truth; therefore, Mahāmati, you should leave behind all marks of discriminatory speech."
