> "Speech" is the teaching that expresses. "What is expressed" is the principle that is expressed. The inquiry asks: which of these two is the ultimate truth? The Buddha answered that both the expressing and the expressed are not the ultimate truth; although what is expressed is the principle, it is not the wondrousness attained by oneself—it seems right but is not; only the place of the noble ones' joy, which is entered by means of words, is it, but speech itself is not. Since the realm of joy of noble wisdom is the wondrousness attained by oneself, he says: "It is not a realm realised by speech or discrimination." There are three reasons why speech cannot reveal the ultimate truth: first, speech issues from arising, ceasing, and agitation, and is impermanent as revolving conditioned arising; second, speech in questions and answers possesses the marks of self and other; third, discriminatory speech fails to understand that all marks are mind-only and nonexistent. Thus he admonishes: "You should leave behind all marks of discriminatory speech."
