> "Just as when a person dreams of men and women, elephants, horses, carts, and foot-soldiers, cities, towns, parks, groves, mountains, rivers, and bathing pools, with all kinds of adornments, and enters among them himself, yet upon awakening recollects them. Mahāmati, what do you think? Does such a man show clever wisdom when he ceaselessly clings in recollection to what was previously dreamt?" Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying, "No, World-Honoured One." The Buddha told Mahāmati, "In this way, ordinary beings are consumed by evil views, and the wisdom of the tīrthikas fails to know that, like a dream, it is the nature of the appearance of one's own mind; they rely on views of identity and difference, both and neither, existence, nonexistence, neither existence nor nonexistence, permanence and impermanence."
