> "Mahāmati, this is just what you asked earlier about why I said that practicing and associating with worldly philosophy and its various dialectics appropriates covetous desire and does not appropriate the Dharma." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One, what are the meanings of the phrases 'appropriating covetous desire' and 'appropriating the Dharma'?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Excellent! Excellent! That you are able to reflect and inquire about such phrasing and meaning for the sake of future sentient beings. Listen attentively! Listen attentively and reflect well; I shall explain it for you." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "I shall indeed receive the teaching." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "As for so-called covetousness: whether grasping or abandoning, whether touching or tasting, being bound and clinging to external dust, falling into the two extreme views, and again generating the aggregate of suffering—birth, old age, sickness, death, worry, sorrow, pain, and affliction—all such calamities arise from craving. This is caused by practicing and associating with worldly philosophy and those of worldly philosophy. I and the Buddhas call this covetousness; this is named appropriating covetous desire and not appropriating the Dharma."
