> From "better to grasp a view of person" downward uses the large to illustrate the small, clarifying the flaw of the view of emptiness. "View of person" is the view of self. "Excessive pride" means that one's own dharmas become exaggerated, resulting in prideful views. The sūtra says: "Claiming to have attained what has not been attained, claiming to have realized what has not been realized"—this refers to such a person. The evil of the view of person is limited, whereas the view of emptiness born of excessive pride rejects all dharmas; hence it is called destruction. Therefore, it is said: "Better to give rise to a view of person as large as Mount Sumeru than to give rise to a view of emptiness." "Falling into views of self and common" and so forth speaks of the origin of giving rise to the view of emptiness: genuinely because from beginningless time one gives rise to views of self-production and common production, taking pleasure and desire in them, failing to understand that all dharmas are mind-only, seeing external dharmas arising and ceasing moment by moment, successively changing and deteriorating—the so-called continuous flow of the aggregates, realms, and entrances altering and ceasing—and conceptualizing that these real dharmas, once ceased, return to nonexistence: this is their view of emptiness. As for false discrimination divorced from the characteristics of words, this also constitutes the meaning of destruction.
