> This clarifies the characteristic of continuous cessation, meaning that although form has already arisen, mind subsequently ceases; thus form and mind do not depend on each other. Even if another mind arises following that form, if mind does not abide in form, based on what condition does it arise again? Because it does not abide from moment to moment and does not grasp either. Thus, even if mind has form, it also lacks the nature of arising; moreover, if it arises from that, then it naturally has no nature of arising to be found; hence it is said, 'It does not arise from a real cause.' Next, refuting the characteristic of cessation: since from the above, seeking the characteristic of momentary establishment cannot even be obtained, how much less could there be a characteristic of momentary cessation? 'Destruction' means cessation. Having refuted arising and cessation, one returns to the original true constancy.
