> Third, the gate of combining sounds and names in expression: if in the Hīnayāna, due to the previous two explanations, the various masters combined them into this third proposition. If relying on the Mahāyāna, in the \*Daśabhūmika-śāstra\*, the speaker speaks by means of two things and the listener hears by means of two things, namely vocal sound and names and sentences; the ear-consciousness hears the sound, and the simultaneous mental consciousness grasps and understands the names and sentences. Furthermore, the \*Vimalakīrti\* states: "The vocal sounds, speech, and letters of the Buddhas accomplish Buddha-work."
