> Second, as for taking imaginary thought as the doctrine: it is because imaginary thought has two meanings: first, disease; second, medicine. 'Disease' refers to clinging views; being merely false and imaginary thoughts, they are what is to be countered, and hence are disease. 'Medicine' refers to the Buddha saying to sentient beings: 'The views of existence and nonexistence you give rise to are all imaginary thought.' Sentient beings, having heard this, immediately depart from those views, and hence it is medicine. It is solely through the Buddha speaking of imaginary thought that the disease of imaginary thought is in turn cured; therefore, the text of the entire sūtra is explained solely through the two characters 'imaginary thought.' Because whenever a false thought arises it is simply imaginary thought, if one consequently brings false thoughts to cessation, one then arrives at the locus of this sūtra; thus it is taken as the doctrine. Therefore, taking imaginary thought as the doctrine, the exhaustion of the imaginary is the purport.
