> This means that only if one does not cling to the various views of the two vehicles and heterodox paths can one practice according to reality, crush the evil views of other doctrines, abandon attachment to self, and so on. "Being able to transform the underlying consciousness with subtle wisdom" refers to transforming the eight consciousnesses into the four wisdoms. "Entering the stage of the Tathāgata's internal realization" means attaining and realizing the same as all buddhas. "Skillfully cultivating samādhi and samāpatti": samādhi is translated here as "correct concentration" (zhengding) or "correct reception" (zhenghou). It is called correct concentration because it is unscattered and can receive all phenomena, cleanly sustaining and discerning them. Furthermore, because there is no external object that can disturb it, it is called correct concentration; because there is no entity to be received, it is called correct reception. Samāpatti is translated here as "equipoise" (dengzhi). Because correct concentration can generate correct wisdom, sustaining all phenomena in equilibrium up to the supreme stage, this dharma should be cultivated skillfully. "Non-Buddhists cling to the view of self, the mark of self, and grasp at real guṇas": guṇa is translated here as "functional quality"; it means that non-Buddhists cling to the mark of self and believe that the four great elements, aggregates, realms, and bases possess real functional qualities, grasping at forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles, and phenomena. Moreover, the two vehicles see the twelve links of dependent origination and, failing to realize the emptiness of their nature, confusedly discriminate within them. Therefore, \[the Buddha\] encourages him not to generate the attachments of non-Buddhists or the false discriminations of the two vehicles with regard to this.
