> What is called the wind of external objects? What should the form of that wind be like? It means that various manifest colours such as blue and red can give rise to the eye-consciousness. Pearl shells and other gems emitting various supreme and wondrous sounds can give rise to the ear-consciousness. Sandalwood, milk, and other fragrances perfuming and spreading various sweet scents can give rise to the nose-consciousness. Cloth, rock honey, and other soothing contacts together with various wholesome and pleasant instruments of joy can give rise to the body-consciousness. Salt, blandness, and other tastes, producing various tastes as appropriate, can give rise to the tongue-consciousness. Present flowers, future fruits, and various mental dharmas, becoming the objective realms cognised by that consciousness as appropriate, can give rise to the mental consciousness. Now in this text, one should examine carefully the mention of dusts to grasp consciousnesses. That manas-consciousness is simply a subtle stage of mental consciousness, having no separate substance! Such six dusts can move the substance of the mind and cause it to be scattered; being like a fierce wind, they are therefore called "wind." Hence it says: "Various colours such as blue and red, / Pearl shells, milk, and rock honey, / The taste of salt, and myriad flowers and fruits."
