> 'That which is bound' is also sentient beings, just as iron breeds rust and thereby destroys the form of the iron itself. Now, observing that sentient beings are empty, there is no cause of bondage, nor are there afflictions that serve as that which binds. Since that which binds is absent, that which is bound is also absent; this re-explains liberation by intrinsic nature. If one makes the claim mentioned above, grasping lust, anger, and delusion as existent and destroying them to make them non-existent, this is called destroying the characteristic of existence to make it non-existent, falling into the view of annihilatory emptiness. Therefore, destroying existence into emptiness is not true emptiness; foolish commoners take it to be true emptiness, and so relying on this meaning I once said with intentional speech: 'Better to give rise to the view of self and person as great as Mount Sumeru, than to give rise to the view of emptiness and harbor overweening pride.' This means that destroying existence into non-existence is not true emptiness; for foolish commoners who take it to be true emptiness, claiming to have attained what they have not attained is called overweening pride.
