> Just as the ocean gives rise to waves due to the wind, the marks of water and the marks of waves continuing without interruption, this illustrates that the ocean of the tathāgatagarbha, stirred by the wind of ignorance, gives rise to the waves of the seven consciousnesses, with saṃsāra continuing uninterrupted in the same way. Yet the original intrinsic nature of the tathāgatagarbha is pure and stainless, free from permanence and impermanence as well as the faults of the non-Buddhists' doctrines of the self. The remaining consciousnesses arise and cease thought-moment by thought-moment, combining through false causes and conditions to give rise to saṃsāra in the three realms. Failing to understand that all phenomena such as form are manifestations of one's own mind, they grasp at names and characteristics, generating all afflictions, creating wholesome and unwholesome karma, and undergoing the retribution of suffering and pleasure. Having arisen from greed, they again give rise to greed; with causes and conditions transmigrating through saṃsāra, there is no time of liberation. Therefore the Lotus Sūtra says: "The cause of all sufferings / has craving as its root." From here upward, it explains the tathāgatagarbha as the cause of the contaminated wholesome and unwholesome of the three realms.
