> If space, a mundane phenomenon, does not share in the arising and ceasing of flowers, how much less could the Tathāgata's accord with perfect enlightenment—which is serenely, truly permanent—be the nature of space? As for enlightenment being the nature of space, the \*Buddhōṣṇīṣa\* says: "Space arises within the great enlightenment." It also says: "Quiescent illumination encompasses space." It further says "equanimous": although perfect enlightenment is the nature of space, they are merged without distinction, pervading the dharmadhātu without division or limitation, with no separate relying and basis; therefore it is said to be "equanimous." This means: space is within enlightenment, and space is still constantly tranquil; how much more so with enlightenment being the nature of space—how could it increase or decrease? The simile still falls short, hence it says "how much less so."
