> this also pertains to both understanding and realization. This \*Sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment\* provides all the aforementioned explanations: the chapter of Mañjuśrī represents sudden awakening in understanding; the completion of Samantacakṣu's contemplation represents sudden awakening in realization; the various wheels of the three contemplations represent gradual awakening in realization. Moreover, in each of the three contemplations, the pure perfect enlightenment that is awakened to is indicated first, the characteristics of practice are clarified next, and the accomplishment of merit is revealed last. The pair of the beginning and the middle is sudden awakening followed by gradual cultivation; the pair of the middle and the end is gradual cultivation followed by sudden awakening. These forms of sudden and gradual all refer to the application of mind, unlike the preceding section which merely classified the teachings. If one grasps their meaning, all become samādhi and prajñā; if one loses their essential purport, they become false thought and neutral ignorance. I hope students will examine and cultivate them carefully. As for the ninth and tenth sections, they will simply be commented upon following the root text, so their structural headings are not cited here.
