> This is the fulfillment of hearing. "I" refers to Mañjuśrī and the Ocean of Ānanda. With the five aggregates being merely provisional, why call it "I"? There are four kinds of "I": first, the imagined \[self\] of ordinary persons; second, the posited \[self\] of heterodox doctrines; third, the conventional distinction between host and guest adopted by sages in accord with the world; fourth, the true self of the dharmakāya. Here it is the latter two, hence there is no fault. "Hearing" means the ear faculty producing consciousness; although caused by the ear base, setting aside the particular and following the general, it is called "I have heard," and is not spoken with a mind of heterodox pride. Under the Signless School, since the self is already without self, hearing is also without hearing; arising from conditions it is empty, yet without destroying provisional designations, it is simply hearing without hearing. If based on the dharmatā and the import of this sūtra, the bodhisattva transmitting the Dharma, with the true self of the non-duality of self and non-self, and the wondrous ear of the non-oneness and non-difference of faculty and object, hears the Dharma-door of the unhindered reality and convention.
