> Tranquil means silent. Sitting is to gather the body; when the body is settled, the mind is at peace; when the mind is at leisure, the objective realm is quiescent. Wishing to settle body and mind, a quiet room is necessary. Do not a quiet room and dwelling with a community contradict each other? There are two explanations: First, because faculties and natures differ: some have much torpor and rely on the community for spurring on, while some have much restlessness and should rest their conditions in solitude; these are not two things done by one person. Second, because samādhi and prajñā are studied equally: this means that the practice of contemplation of perfect penetration requires śamatha and vipaśyanā to support each other; one must rely on good spiritual friends or those of identical view and practice, deliberating on the Dharma gateways all day long so as not to let the application of mind go astray—an error of a hair's breadth leads to a loss of a thousand miles. Thus Vimalakīrti said: 'It is not necessarily sitting that constitutes sitting in tranquil meditation.' Although living with the community, there is no hindrance to being in one's own room, where in the first, middle, and last watches of the night, or when one is not discussing the Dharma or reciting scriptures, one must sit quietly and reflect, so that the wisdoms of hearing, reflection, and cultivation become fully luminous—how could it be merely taking one's ease? Thus there is no contradiction. This—relying on samādhi to uphold precepts, and dwelling with a community to sit quietly—answers the question on abiding and maintaining.
