> All those up to the seventh stage cultivate the path within a dream; therefore the \*Huayan\* has the metaphor of crossing a great river in a dream. When one realizes complete and luminous awakening, only then does one know that afflictions are originally non-existent, and one sees that the effort of wisdom capable of severing them is also false and illusory. It is like using medicine to treat an illness in a dream and being cured: upon awakening, both medicine and illness are non-existent; hence it is called 'illusory effort.'
