> Tenth, the pair of bondage and liberation. The Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: 'Sense bases and sense objects share the same source; bondage and liberation are not two. The nature of consciousness is false and unreal, like flowers in the sky.' Now, afflictions depend on consciousness; since the nature of consciousness is already empty, how could afflictions bind? Although the names and marks of the ten pairs above differ, their import is no different; it is simply that because the Buddha realizes the awakened mind and the mind is free from grasping and rejecting, all phenomena are universally equal, round, and subtle. Thus here I have only cited an example for each, without further inquiring one by one into the reasons for their mutual identity and non-obstruction.
