Just as with a piece of dry wood, drilling it with a wooden drill brings forth fire, which in turn burns both pieces of wood. When the wood and fire are consumed, the smoke naturally vanishes. Having become ashes, they scatter spontaneously, unlike the physical obstruction of the two pieces of wood. Aligning these with the dharmas according to the four stages: the piece of wood illustrates the cultivated illusory delusion; the wooden drill illustrates the illusory wisdom capable of cultivation; the smoke illustrates departure; and the ashes illustrate discarding. The sūtra text first says "the ashes fly," which is an inversion in translation; it certainly must be that smoke vanishes first, and the remaining ashes scatter. The analogy lacks the revelation of enlightenment, presumably because the text is abbreviated; the preceding dharma and subsequent application both possess it. If one wishes to complete it, one should take the ground as solely perfect enlightenment: since the wood and the rest originally came from the ground, when they are completely burned away, only the ground remains. Just as various illusions arise in the wondrous mind of perfect enlightenment, when the several tiers of illusions are completely discarded, perfect enlightenment originally remains unmoved.
