> Next, to answer from where this seal arises: the Buddha said, 'Just like the place from which the Buddha arises, the seal is also like this, arising from that.' Why is this? All tathāgatas arise from the bīja of Buddha-nature, the bodhicitta; one should know that all seals also arise from the bodhicitta. The seal arises from the dharmadhātu and seals the disciple, just as when a king seals with a seal, all place faith in and accept it. Now, sealing them with the seal arising from the entire dharmadhātu is the Dharma-seal; it is the seal of the marks of a great person. Next, to answer what this seal is used for: one uses this dharmadhātu seal to seal the disciple. 'Seal' has the sense of being inviolable, because oneself and others do not transgress it. That is to say, from the initial bodhicitta up to the ultimate Buddha-wisdom, throughout this interval one does not retreat or regress; therefore the world names one a bodhisattva. By means of this seal, one abides in the bodhicitta and never again regresses; hence it is called inviolable. This seal is precisely the sealing of the gate of saṃsāra and the opening of the path of the dharmadhātu; spoken of in brief, this seal equals the dharmadhātu in measure. By sealing them with this seal of the dharmadhātu, it causes that person to possess the insignia of the dharmadhātu and to be identical with the body of the universal gateway of the dharmadhātu; hence it is called 'sealing the disciple.' Taking the dharmadhātu seal as the brief means sealing them with a single Dharma. If expounded broadly, it cannot be measured; this is the insignia and mark of a great person.
