> If one slanders them, this is slandering the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, and slandering the great bodhicitta; hence one commits a grave offense. Because all upāyas within the secret treasury are upāyas of the Buddha, defaming any single dharma is slandering all dharmas. Even regarding worldly affairs such as earning a living, enterprises, and arts, whenever they accord with correct principle and are spoken by the Buddha, one must not slander them either, to say nothing of the teachings of the three vehicles. The sixth: one should not give rise to stinginess toward any dharma; if violated, one breaks a grave prohibition. Because a bodhisattva gathers all dharmas fundamentally for the sake of all sentient beings, if there is anything kept secret and begrudged, this is abandoning bodhi; hence one commits a grave offense. The seventh: one must not hold wrong views, which refers to slandering cause and effect as non-existent, asserting that there are no buddhas and no persons who have seen the path, and all such wrong views. If one gives rise to wrong views, one naturally abandons the Buddha, Dharma, Saṅgha, and bodhi; hence one commits a grave precept offense. Whereas a śrāvaka only incurs a sthūlātyaya; therefore, one should know that their upāyas are incomplete and this is merely an explanation according to a single approach. The eighth: toward a person who has generated the great mind, one should encourage and inspire their mind from the outset so as not to let them retreat or cease. If one sees them becoming lax and retreating and does not encourage and inspire them, or obstructs their mind, or causes them to depart from the path of unexcelled bodhi, this goes against the deeds that should be done by all tathāgatas; hence one commits a grave offense. The ninth: without observing the faculties of a person of the small vehicle, explaining the great Dharma before them; or without observing the faculties of a person of great capacity, explaining the practice of the small Dharma before them—one commits a grave prohibition. This is an incompleteness of upāya; because it goes against the upāya of the Tathāgata, expounding the Dharma with a mismatch of capacity makes one an enemy of humans and devas; hence one commits a grave offense. The tenth: a bodhisattva should constantly practice giving, yet must not give others instruments that harm living things, meaning giving alcohol, poison, swords, staves, and all such instruments that do not benefit others—doing so incurs a grave offense. Because a bodhisattva constantly carries out the practice of benefiting others, now acting contrary to this, one commits a grave offense. One should know that the earlier precepts such as not killing are meant to accord with the intentions of others and are precepts upheld by those newly entering the Dharma. The ten matters explained next are the precepts of the correct practice of all bodhisattvas. If a bodhisattva correctly accords with the latter ten precepts, even if they act within the former ten matters, it does not constitute a violation.
