> The sūtra says: “The exalted one.” This is Nārāyaṇa. Non-Buddhists impute that this deity is clear, calm, eternal, and unmoving, yet has ministers who produce all things. It is just as a ruler governs by non-action, while officials receive commands and carry them out. Because there is no one more exalted than the creator lord, he is called “exalted.” Furthermore, this school imputes that the exalted one pervades all places of earth, water, fire, wind, and space. Formerly, a dialectician wished to refute that school’s tenet, so he went to the temple of the deity, sat on the body of the deity's statue, and ate and drank. In the Western regions, food remnants are considered extremely impure, so they were all enraged. The dialectician asked: “According to your tenet, does he not pervade all places with the characteristics of the realms of earth, water, fire, wind, and space?” They answered: “It is so.” The dialectician said: “He is precisely earth, water, fire, and wind, and I am also like this. If they interpenetrate, what is impermissible that you should be enraged?” The crowd was silent and could not answer. This also arises from not contemplating the intrinsic nature of the self, giving rise to such false imputations.
