### [2.89](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1796.2.89)

> As for the sixtieth mind, the Sanskrit text lacks the passage. The ācārya says: “It is missing one, the monkey-like mind. The nature of a monkey is that its body and mind are scattered and never rest even for a moment. Practitioners are also like this: their nature is restless and uneasy, and thus they grasp at many things, just like a monkey letting go of one and grasping another.” Broadly speaking, sentient beings are all like this; here we speak in terms of its predominance. Here, not following thoughts of movement and distraction, and tethering the mind to a single object, is the antidote. Just as a monkey, if tethered to a pillar, will no longer indulge its inclinations by leaping and prancing, this is the remedy. However, among these sixty minds, sometimes they are predominantly present in the practitioner's original nature, or they are triggered from past habits by their application of mind when practicing the path, or they arise mixed together at once, or they are produced in sequence. One must pay attention and observe them at all times; naturally one will accord with the pure bodhicitta. When an ācārya levels and calms the mental ground for a disciple, they must also weed out each of them one by one.
