> The sūtra says: “Pudgala.” This refers to that school’s imputation of a “taker of repeated births,” which is just a single self, merely given different names according to the circumstance. If there is one who proceeds from this life to a future life, then the conscious spirit is eternal. If the conscious spirit were eternal, how could there be death and birth? Death is called ceasing in this place, and birth is called emerging in that place; therefore one cannot say the spirit is eternal. If it is impermanent, then there is no self. Just as within the Buddha-Dharma, the Vātsīputrīyas and the Sarvāstivādins—these two schools impute that dharmas exist in the three times. If the past, future, and present definitely exist, then they are identical to having a pudgala, and lose the Buddha’s three seals of Dharma; the bodhisattvas of the Western regions constructed various syllogisms to refute their tenets.
