> 'Vajra' is diamond/thunderbolt, and 'kavaca' means armor. The Tathāgata, with the vajra eye, universally contemplates sentient beings and sees that none are not clad in this vajra armor; therefore, he expounds it with true words. Taking the initial syllable VA as the substance of the mantra: VA means that all dharmas are free from verbal expression. Whatever belongs to the sphere of conceptual elaboration and verbal expression can be broken and altered, lacking firmness; therefore, VA is taken as the substance. The subsequent syllables are all explained through derivation. Why are all dharmas free from verbal expression? Because arising is unfindable. Why is arising unfindable? Because their intrinsic nature is pure. This intrinsic purity is the body of Vajrasattva. Next, the meaning of armor is clarified. If a dharma is produced through conditioned activity, know that it has only a provisional name and changes according to conditions; it cannot even secure its own nature, let alone ward off the sharp arrows of the six dusts. Now contemplating the vajra substance's inexhaustible adornments, they are entirely free from conditioned activity; therefore, it is firm and indestructible, untouched by the hundred negations, and is thus called vajra armor. The final syllable HŪṂ is the sound of fearlessness, and also means the power of mastery, and also means joy. When, endowed with samādhi and prajñā, one realizes this syllable-gateway HA, one knows oneself that one is certainly able to destroy all hindrances and universally protect sentient beings; hence there is great joy. Next, the Tathāgata-eye mantra is spoken: just as the garuḍa king is fully endowed with power and firmness of plumage, and also attains an extremely bright and sharp eye, looking down from the sky upon the great ocean as though looking at a mirror image, and can then seize nāgas at will with mastery; know that the mantra practitioner is also like this. Through empowering himself with this pure Tathāgata eye, the assembly of the ocean-like maṇḍala will appear before him, and he will fully see all roots, conditions, and obstructive dharmas; because the vajra deeds are thereby accomplished at will, it is spoken next.
