> " 'At that time' means this very moment. 'Mātaṅgī': translated according to meaning as 'original clan'; later in the sūtra she is the 'Bhikṣuṇī Prakṛti'. 'Śavikarā', also called 'Kapila', here means 'Golden-Headed' or 'Yellow-Haired', a non-Buddhist who ate cooked rice. Having served Brahmā-deva as master, he obtained this mantra; the mantra was originally spoken by Brahmā-deva and practiced by non-Buddhists, and worldly people recited and practiced it as an illusionist art. 'About to destroy the precept-essence': the prātimokṣa precepts, generated by the fourfold karman with one motion and three proclamations, are the substance of bodily and vowed action. This substance is unmanifest action, arising from manifest action; it belongs to the third category of dharmas neither form nor mind, and serves as the support for precepts. If upheld it thrives, and if violated it weakens; hence it is called 'precept-essence'. Ānanda had no intention \[of violating them\]; forced into the house, desire was on the verge of violation but not yet violated, hence it says 'about to destroy'. As the text states below: 'Among the eighty thousand deeds, only one precept was on the verge of violation; because his mind was pure, he had not yet drowned.' One should know that Ānanda did not violate even a duṣkṛta; the causal conditions are as stated elsewhere.
