> "Affliction and the knowable are called the two hindrances. Because the affliction hindrance obstructs the mind, the mind is not liberated, creating karma and receiving retribution. Because the hindrance of the knowable obstructs prajñā, prajñā is not liberated, being deluded regarding the principle of dharma-emptiness and not knowing the natures and marks of dharmas. If one comprehends that the original nature is constantly tranquil and all dharmas are originally empty, naturally turmoil and affliction will not arise, and the nature of karma will not form; what then is birth and death, and what is nirvāṇa? Nirvāṇa and birth and death are like yesterday's dream; that we are now bound by them is truly due to not knowing. The names and substances of the two hindrances are as conventionally analyzed."
