> The preceding text's scolding that "this is not your mind" was intended to make him recognize the false, still pointing out that all phenomena are only manifestations of mind. Here he also causes him to understand that the false which is manifested fundamentally has no self-nature, but is originally the one reality. The one reality has never shaken or moved; how have phenomena ever arisen or ceased? The Buddha's intention was for him to see the true right through the false, so he confirmed that the seeing facing objects is originally unmoving, broadly rebuking mistaking things for the self and the nature of the mind losing reality. Ānanda failed to fathom the Buddha's profound intention, assuming that the two substances of true and false are entirely distinct, and that apart from arising and ceasing there is a non-arising and non-ceasing. If it were like this, the statement "only mind" would be established in vain, and the words "false dharmas" would be spoken to no purpose; chasing words and misunderstanding the import, in the end it becomes inversion. Although harbouring doubts, he did not dare express them in words; hence it says: "joined their palms and made obeisance to the Buddha, wishing to hear...", and so forth.
