> Kātyāyana is a clan name; his personal name was Kakuda; this non-Buddhist clung to all dharmas being both existent and non-existent. Sañjaya is the personal name, and Vairaṭī is his mother's designation; this non-Buddhist gave rise to the view of spontaneity. Although the non-Buddhist doctrines are many, they do not go beyond the two views of annihilationism and eternalism. These two both belong to the category of annihilationist views; hence it says: "both said it is annihilated". These persons held perverse doctrines, not knowing that karmic seeds produce one another, and falsely claimed that after death is precisely nirvāṇa.
