> Surpassing all mundane and supramundane realms, he is called 'Unsurpassed.' Among all the Buddha's virtues, great compassion is foremost, hence it is uniquely praised. An immaculate jewel (maṇi) yields \[wonders\] according to wish, giving endlessly; the Buddha is also like this, hence called 'Jewel King.' Parables and words apply to phenomena and to principle, hence 'various expedients.' 'Sunken' means long mired in saṃsāra; 'benighted' means eternally covered by avidyā. Expedients can open, and guiding and encouraging can bring \[them\] out; both are called guiding.
