> The five precepts mean: not killing, not stealing, not committing sexual misconduct, not lying, and not drinking intoxicants. After the Buddha conferred the three refuges upon the lay congregation such as the elder Trapuṣa, he conferred the five precepts on them as upāsakas. The sūtra states that the five precepts are the great taboos under heaven: if one violates these five, in heaven it contravenes the five stars, on earth it contravenes the five sacred peaks, in the directions it contravenes the five emperors, and in the body it contravenes the five viscera; worldly transgressions such as these are boundless. If spoken of supramundane-wise, it destroys the fivefold dharmakāya and all buddha-dharmas, because the five precepts are the foundation of both great and small śīla. For those who are fond of learning this, \[the Bodhisattva\] appears as a pure man and expounds this Dharma to them. 'Upāsikā' means a pure woman, or an attendant woman.
