> The sequence and ceremonial deportment of the bodhimaṇḍa are as explained in Guifeng's \*Ceremonial for Cultivating and Realizing Perfect Enlightenment\*. Empowered by reciting the mantra, generating the vow to see the Buddha, and the Buddha manifesting his body—this is termed resonance and response. If one sees other states contrary to one's fundamental training, where reality contradicts the vow, that is a demonic state and not a true resonance and response. Furthermore, seeing a true response causes the mind to attain awakening, afflictions to become slight and thin, and wisdom to become bright and pure. If, as a result of seeing a Buddha, foolishness remains as before and afflictions become heavier instead, all these are demonic states and not the true Buddha.
