> 'Nine grades of habitual tendencies' refers to the nine grades each in the desire realm, the first dhyāna, the second dhyāna, and the third dhyāna. Seeds and actual manifestations are both absent, which is called 'completely extinguished.' This is called 'extinguished' because noble ones have severed them; it is not the same as ordinary beings temporarily suppressing them. Since habitual tendencies are absent, suffering and bliss both perish; free from the bonds of the lower realms, they have no dwelling place. Yet, not having advanced to sever the afflictions of the fourth dhyāna, their abodes are separately established within the shared character of the mind of equanimity; because when cultivating dhyāna, tainted and untainted are mixed, they reside separately here. The \*Kośa\* says, 'The mixed cultivation of dhyāna has five different grades, producing birth in the five Pure Abodes.' The five distinct grades are the inferior grade, middling grade, superior grade, superior-exceptional grade, and supreme grade; their aspects are as explained elsewhere.
