> Regarding "the world," this does not explain the capacity \[of sentient beings\] in terms of realms and karmic actions. If one speaks of what constitutes capacity, it resides precisely in the word "sound." If it were not linked to "world," its meaning would not be apparent, because the ten dharmadhātus are the place where capacity arises. Dividing the text, there are two parts: first, a general explanation of the meaning of "world." Regarding "distinctions and separations," among these ten there are ordinary beings and sages, great and small, provisional and real; their two retributions and three karmic actions differ in height and depth, hence termed distinct and separated. From "the world is" downward, it specifically shows what constitutes capacity. Regarding "the world is matter," the word "mind" is also omitted. Among the ten dharmadhātus, each has three worlds: the provisional and the real belong to the primary retribution, while the lands belong to the dependent retribution. Now speaking of matter and mind, this tentatively refers to the real phenomena of the five aggregates. The provisional designations are established by gathering the aggregates, and the lands are that in which the aggregates abide; therefore, raising matter and mind is sufficient to encompass the remaining two. Regarding "matter is contemplating the world's body" and so on, this means that if one speaks in terms of the Mahāsattva's own practice of contemplating the five aggregates as empty to achieve the sacred path, then it should be named Contemplating the World's Body and Contemplating the World's Mind. Since it is named Contemplating Sound, it means contemplating the vocal karma of those sentient beings of the ten realms as the capacity; hence it says "sound is the capacity." This is establishing the designation in terms of converting others. This text tentatively assigns body and mind to the response and vocal karma to capacity; if fully explained, each possesses the three karmic activities. When all three reside in capacity: throwing the five limbs to the ground, burning incense, and scattering flowers are bodily karma serving as capacity; when the Mahāsattva goes forth to respond, it is Contemplating the World's Body. Fastening mindfulness and counting breaths are mental karma serving as capacity; when the Mahāsattva goes forth to respond, it is Contemplating the World's Mind. Praying and supplicating are vocal karma serving as capacity; when the Mahāsattva goes forth to respond, it is Contemplating the World's Sound. When all three reside in the response, body and mind are as stated above. In terms of vocal karma, it is the Mahāsattva himself contemplating sounds and attaining realization of the path; because his own practice is accomplished, he is able to respond to beings. This explanation of capacity and response each having three, though perhaps different from the Profound Meaning of the Universal Gate Chapter, conforms to the present commentary text.
