> As for 'person and teaching': invoking Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is the person; the dhāraṇī for eliminating and subduing poisonous afflictions is the teaching. In terms of one's own practice, the teaching should come first and the person after, because what all Buddhas take as their teacher is the so-called teaching, and Avalokiteśvara attained the Way through awakening to the teaching. Here, in terms of transforming others, the person comes first and the teaching after, because the teaching does not operate alone—its propagation depends on persons. Avalokiteśvara expounded the teaching he had realized to cure the poison of the three obstacles in others; hence the title of the sūtra places the person first and the teaching after.
