> Fourth, regarding the Mahāyāna treatises: The \*Upadeśa\* (\*Dazhidulun\*) states: 'If you seek great benefit, you should firmly observe the precepts; they are the root of all virtues and the essential requirement of going forth. Cherish them as you would a precious jewel; protect them as you would your own life, for these precepts are the abiding place of all wholesome dharmas. Furthermore, like one who lacks feet wanting to walk, one who lacks wings wanting to fly, or one who lacks a boat wanting to cross, it is impossible; if one lacks the precepts and wishes to attain good fruit, that too is impossible. If one abandons these precepts, though one dwells in the mountains and practices austerities, drinks water and ingests qi, wears clothes of grass, dons the kāṣāya, and undergoes all kinds of severe austerities, one will vainly gain nothing. Though a person may be poor and base, if they can observe the precepts, their fragrance is smelled in the ten directions, their fame spreads far and wide, they are revered and loved by gods and humans, and all their wishes are fulfilled. When a precept-observing person reaches the end of life, though the wind-knives dismember the body and the sinews and veins are severed, the mind has no dread.' The \*Bodhisattvabhūmi\* states: 'The unvarying cause of the thirty-two marks is entirely attained from observing the precepts; if one does not observe the precepts, one cannot even attain the body of a base human, how much less the retribution of the marks of a great person.' In the \*Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā\*, there are two chapters, "Praising Precepts" and "Retribution of Precepts", which broadly enumerate profound benefits, fully as explained there.
