> Question: Is it lost only when apart from both, or is it lost when apart from either one? Answer: It is lost when apart from both; being apart from only one is indeterminate. Thus, in the text, if the assembly is large and the voice is small so that they do not hear the upoṣadha recitation, it directs that a wheel-turning \[stand\] be made, upon which high seat one stands and recites it; this is seeing without hearing. Furthermore, as when many people perform the upoṣadha recitation, how could everyone see the face of the one performing the rite? This is hearing without seeing. If one is apart from both of these, it is termed losing the chanda. If being apart from either one results in loss, it is based on circumstances such as a screen or barrier. The earlier statement that being apart from seeing and hearing causes loss refers generally to the mutual separation from adjacent seats in succession. As the Pañcavargika-vinaya explains: this refers to being separated by sharing a covering or barrier; even if it is recited, it is invalid.
