One recklessly points to mountains and valleys, and carelessly assigns trees and groves; when it comes to the precise limits, how could they ever be known? The demarcation entirely fails to be accomplished—how self-defeating! Therefore, in the Vinayavibhāṣā: when demarcating a water-wave separate boundary of fifteen feet, stones were arranged in succession, and having placed them all around, one then chanted following the stones. The Samantapāsādikā also says: loose, rounded stones are not permitted. These are all clear texts; one must not allow careless statements that ruin both oneself and others. If a rite of upasampadā fails to be accomplished, it causes the other person to spend their whole life in vain; and in the future, one will oneself encounter such a invalid sīmā. Therefore the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra says: 'After my parinirvāṇa, bhikṣus without precepts will fill Jambudvīpa.'
