> Eighth, directly explaining the request for the precepts. That instructing master, having handed the robes and bowl to the precept-master, straightens his garments and comforts his mind. With deep earnestness and utmost sincerity, relying upon the pure assembly, he begs for mercy and requests the precepts. He tells him: "As for this precept Dharma, only when a Buddha appears in the world is this Dharma established; because it is esoteric and sublime, laypeople are not permitted to hear it. Therefore, among the six destinies, only humans may receive it; yet even among them, those with disqualifications and impediments may not receive it in full. Now that you are free of them, you are indeed a pure vessel. You must request the precepts with a profound mind, and in a moment you will enter the ranks of the Three Jewels; if your mind is frivolous, the precepts cannot be obtained." Doing so according to the occasion is explained extensively in the vinayas and treatises. "However, requesting the precepts originates from your own mind. Yet because you do not understand the standard procedures, you have no way to progress step by step; therefore the Buddha instructed me to declare the words for you. You should follow my words:" "Let the venerable saṃgha listen! I, so-and-so, seek to receive the upasampadā precepts from the upādhyāya so-and-so; I, so-and-so, now request to receive the upasampadā precepts from the saṃgha, with so-and-so as upādhyāya. May the saṃgha rescue and deliver me, out of compassionate pity!" (Stated three times. Having instructed him, \[the master\] sits down again).
