> Third, explaining improper reprimand. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: reprimanding for the rest of one's life, reprimanding for the whole duration of varṣā, reprimanding a sick person, or reprimanding without summoning him before oneself, or without pointing out his fault—these all constitute what is improper. If one is punished, and without apologizing receives provisions, niśraya, and so forth; or if one is reprimanded lightly by another and does not perform duties and labor for the upādhyāya, ācārya, and other bhikṣus; one commits an offense. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'If one has given robes to a co-practicing disciple or a niśraya disciple, and he cannot be instructed, one strips him \[of them\] for the purpose of subjugation; later, after he has been subjugated, returning them to him incurs no offense. If when giving the robes one said: "Dwell here; if you please my mind and receive the sūtras on my behalf, I will give them to you"; and later he does not comply with the superior's intention, taking them back constitutes no transgression.' The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: if one wishes to subjugate him, stripping him of robes so that his naked body is shameful \[is improper\]. The Buddha said: 'One should not subjugate a śrāmaṇera over a minor matter; if subjugating him, leave him one robe.'
